Ingredients for Biscuits

  • Flour-All purpose flour works great for this recipe. Measure the flour by scooping it into a measuring spoon a leveling off with a straight knife.
  • Baking Powder- make sure your baking powder is fresh. It is easy to let these kind of items sit in the back of a cupboard and then they get old, it won’t perform like it should.
  • Butter- for this recipe I used salted butter, make sure it is cold so you grate it or break it up into little pieces.

ingredients

  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Buttermilk or Milk– I don’t always have buttermilk on hand for this recipe so a great substitute is to mix one cup of milk with one tablespoon of distilled vinegar or lemon juice and let it sit for 5 minutes. This will create sour milk that you can use in place of buttermilk.

How to make Homemade Biscuits

To make this simple biscuit recipe, start by combining the dry ingredients. In a large mixing bowl whisk together the flour, salt and sugar. Just whisk until the flour is fine and you don’t see any clumps.

Add in the cold butter and mix it into the flour mixture using a pastry knife. Another easy method is to use a cheese grater to grate the butter and then add it to the flour mixture.

flour and butter

You want the butter to be about the size of a pea. If you don’t own a pastry knife you can use two butter knives or even a fork to break up the butter in the flour mixture. To use two knives simple hold a knife in each hand and slice through the butter repeatedly until you have broken it down to small pieces.

Pour in the buttermilk/milk and stir with a wooden spoon until well combined. The dough will be sticky at this point. Roll the dough out of the mixing bowl onto a well floured, clean countertop.

mixing and rolling out dough for biscuits

Knead the dough on the flour surface for one minute until no longer sticky. Use a rolling pin to roll the biscuit dough out to a 1/2 inch thick circle. To cut the biscuits you can use a biscuit cutter if you have one, or I don’t, so I just use a drinking glass to cut out my biscuits. The glass I use is about 2 inches in diameter and makes the perfect sized biscuits.

Place the cut biscuits onto a baking sheet, it does not need to be greased. Repeat the process of rolling out the biscuit dough and cutting biscuits until you have used up all of the dough.

Bake the biscuits in a 425º F oven for 12-15 minutes, until they are cooked through and golden brown on top.

Remove from the oven and eat while warm…because they are so much better fresh out of the oven!
