Preheat oven to 450ºF. Add 1/2 cup butter to a 10.25 inch cast iron skillet and place in the oven until the butter is melted, 1-2 minutes.
Make the dough-in a mixing bowl, combine the 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour, 4 teaspoons baking powder, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, 2 cups buttermilk and mix with a wooden spoon until a wet dough is formed.
Prepare for baking- spread the biscuit dough into the skillet with the melted butter. Use a spatula or wooden spoon to spread the dough into the bottom of the pan. Cut the dough into 10-12 square biscuits with a sharp knife or pastry cutter.
Bake- bake the biscuits in the oven for 20-15 minutes until golden brown and crisp on the edges. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
