These easy cast iron apple dumplings are made with fresh apples wrapped in crescent roll dough and baked in a homemade caramel sauce made with butter, brown sugar and heavy cream. No Sprite or 7UP is needed for these warm, buttery apple dumplings.
Roll out 2 packages refrigerated crescent rolls and separate triangles. Roll one apple slice from 1 Cosmic Crisp/Gala apple up in each triangle starting from the wide end, folding the corners over the apple then rolling to the thinner side.
Over medium heat, melt the 1 cup butter in a 12 inch cast iron skillet, add in the 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, stir to dissolve the brown sugar with a whisk or wooden spoon. Add in the 1 cup heavy cream and 1 teaspoon vanilla, stir to combine.
Place the rolled apples into the caramel sauce then spoon some of the caramel over the crescent rolled apples.
Bake for 30-45 minutes until the dumplings are golden brown and the caramel has thickened and is bubbling.
Allow to cool a few minutes. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Be sure to spoon some of the caramel over before serving.
