Why Bake in a Cast Iron Skillet

Cast iron skillets are for more than just cooking the perfect hamburger or homemade steak. Cast iron skillets are great for making simple desserts like this Gingerbread skillet cookie, cherry pineapple dump cake, or this pumpkin chocolate chip skillet cookie.

Cast iron is famous for its heat-retaining abilities, kind of like its superpower, which helps cook foods evenly.

It works so great for skillet cookies to create a delicious crunchy crust with a soft and chewy center. It also has a lovely non-stick finish that makes cleaning up a breeze.

Canned Cinnamon Rolls and Apple Pie Filling Ingredients

Haha! I had to laugh at my self for even putting a title on this section, but just to humor myself, I’m doing it anyway…Here is what you need to make this recipe:

  • Canned Cinnamon Rolls with Frosting– I just used one can and the regular sized cinnamon rolls, not the Grands
  • Canned Apple Pie Filling

How to Bake Cinnamon Rolls and Apple Pie Filling in a Skillet

You’ve got your 2 ingredients, now you are ready to bake this delicious, simple treat. Let’s walk through the super simple steps to make this skillet bake happen.

cut up pieces of cinnamon rolls in a cast iron skillet
  1. Prepare cinnamon rolls– start by opening the can of cinnamon rolls, set the frosting aside, slice the rolls into quarters
  2. Prepare for baking– place the sliced cinnamon rolls into a grease 12-inch cast iron skillet. Open the can of apple pie filling and pour over the top of the sliced cinnamon rolls in the pan
  3. Bake– bake the cinnamon roll apple pie filling in a 375º F oven for 20-25 minutes, until the rolls are golden brown and cooked through.
  4. Frost– while the rolls are still hot, pour the frosting that came with the cinnamon rolls over the top of the cinnamon roll apple pie filling bake.

How to Serve and Storage

This is a sweet treat all on its own, so I don’t feel that this needs anything additional. With that being said, however, I do think this would be so tasty with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream and topped with a drizzle of caramel sauce. YUM!

If you have extras or leftovers, store in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave for a minute to heat through.

Make sure to remove this from the cast iron to store, do not store in your skillet to avoid rust.
