How to make Baked Beans

To make this simple baked beans recipe start by cooking the bacon. In a large cast iron over medium high heat place your sliced bacon and cook and stir until just crisp. About 5 minutes. Just prior to cooking, slice the bacon into bite sized pieces. I find this is easiest to do when the bacon is really cold, almost frozen.

Once the bacon has finished cooking remove to a plate lined with a paper towel. Drain all but one tablespoon of bacon grease from the pan and place back over the heat. Add the chopped green pepper and onion into the pan and cook and stir until the onion is translucent and the pepper is softened, about 3 minutes.

Add the bacon back into the pan and remove from the heat until ready to add to the bean mixture.

In a large mixing bowl combine the cans of pork and beans, Worcestershire, molasses, brown sugar, oregano, salt and pepper. Stir until the brown sugar is dissolved and all ingredients are well combined.

To the bean mixture add the cooked bacon, peppers and onions. Stir until they are all mixed in.

Pour into a 9 x 13 inch baking dish and bake at 375º F for one hour. No need to stir or anything, just let them bake and all those flavors get combined in the oven. Remove and allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!!

Can I make Baked Beans ahead?

You can make this recipe ahead a day or so if needed. There are a few ways this works. You can make it and bake it all the way. Allow to cool, then cover and refrigerate. Bake at 375º F for about 20 minutes to heat through before serving.

Secondly, you could prepare the beans and bacon mixtures and store in the refrigerator until you need to bake them. Place in the baking dish and bake for an hour at 375º F.

Lastly, this can be made and placed into a slow cooker on low for 4-6 hours, until ready to serve.

Can I freeze Baked Beans?

You can make this recipe ahead, allow to cool and cover tightly with plastic wrap and foil. Place in the freezer for up to 3 months.

When you are ready to use, place in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours before needed to allow to thaw. Bake at 375º F for 20 minutes, or until heated through.
