Can I make this Double Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie Without a Cast Iron Skillet?
If you don’t own a cast iron skillet, but would still like to make this double chocolate cookie, simply spread the cookie dough in a greased 9 x 13 inch baking dish and cook according to the recipe at the bottom of this page.
Ingredients for Double Chocolate Skillet Cookie
Let’s walk through what you will need to gather to make this double chocolate cookie deliciousness happen.
- 1/2 cup butter-I like to use unsalted butter, so I don’t need to adjust the amount of salt in the recipe. Make sure the butter is room temperature so it will mix in easily.
- 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips- for maximum flavor, or try a combination of both semi-sweet and milk chocolate.
- 1/2 cup sugar-can’t make a sweet treat without some sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar- a little more sweetness, be sure to pack it into the measuring cup before adding to the recipe.
- 2 eggs-large or extra large eggs are my go to
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla-not vanilla extract, but the good stuff
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder-use Dutch processed or just good old Hershey’s cocoa for this recipe.
How to Make Skillet Double Chocolate Chip Cookie
Make the Chocolate Cookie Dough
- in a large mixing bowl or stand mixer, mix together the softened butter, sugar, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Mix until well combined, about 1 minute.
- next, add in the flour, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder. Mix together until everything is well combined. The dough will be pretty sticky, which is exactly how it should be.
- lastly, fold in the chocolate chips, then spread the cookie dough into a well greased 12 inch cast iron skillet. Don’t forget the extra chocolate chips on top.
Bake the Skillet Cookie
- bake the skillet chocolate cookie in a 350º F oven for 15-20 minutes. The edges will kind of pull away from the sides of the pan and the center will not jiggle if you give the pan a shake.
How to Serve Double Chocolate Skillet Cookie
I won’t judge if you just add some ice cream on top and hand out spoons! However, if you are feeding more that just your family, scoop out some cookie and top it with ice cream, hot fudge and caramel.
Serve the cookie on its own if you would like as well. This skillet cookie can be sliced like a pizza into triangles making individual servings.
Leftovers and Storage
If you do happen to have some leftover double chocolate cookie, take it out of the skillet and store in an air tight container or zip top bag on the counter for up to 3 days.
This skillet cookie can also be frozen; freeze slices or the whole cookie out of the skillet in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla

- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350º F and grease a 12 inch cast iron skillet.

- Add in the flour, salt, baking powder, and cocoa powder. Continue to mix until everything is well combined and a sticky dough is formed.
- Mix in the chocolate chips.
- Spread out evenly into a greased 12 inch cast iron skillet
- Bake for 15-20 minutes
