How to make Chocolate Truffles with Cream Cheese

First, to make this simple chocolate truffle recipe, start with room temperature cream cheese and butter. Place both into a medium sized mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer until fluffy, about one minute. Add in the cocoa powder and vanilla and mix until combined. Add in the powdered sugar one cup at a time until well blended.

To make the homemade chocolate truffles into small balls, I like to use a tablespoon cookie scoop to scoop out some of the batter and roll it between my hands to make a smooth 1-inch ball. Place the chocolate truffles onto a baking sheet that has been lined with parchment paper or wax paper.

If you feel that the batter is too soft, place it into the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes to allow it to chill and harden up a bit.

Roll the formed chocolate truffle balls into the coating of your choice. Some of my favorite coatings for these cream cheese truffles are:

  • colored sprinkles
  • chocolate sprinkles
  • chopped nuts; walnuts, pecans, almonds or peanuts
  • powdered sugar
  • toffee pieces
  • cocoa powder
  • toasted coconut
  • graham cracker crumbs

How to Store Chocolate Cream Cheese Truffles

These homemade truffles should be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container since they are made with cream cheese. Just take them out about 5 minutes before serving to allow them to soften a little.

Can Cream Cheese Truffles be frozen?

These truffles are a perfect treat to make ahead and place into the freezer until you are ready to share them. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 months. Place into the refrigerator 24 hours before you are going to serve them to allow them to thaw.
