This Easy Chocolate Lava Cake Recipe is made with simple ingredients, items you probably already have sitting in the fridge and pantry. Butter, eggs, chocolate, sugar, flour are what make up this simple lava cake recipe. Lava cakes are perfect to make for that special (romantic) dinner for you and that special someone, such an easy Valentine’s dessert!

Lava Cake Ingredients

I kept this recipe pretty simple, because it is one I wanted to be able to make myself without having to make a special trip to the grocery store. So these ingredients are hopefully items you already have in your home. For this lava cake recipe you will need:

  • Butter-I am using salted butter, but unsalted would work as well in this recipe
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips-yep, no special chocolates needed for this recipe, just some good old semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Milk chocolate chips- add a smooth chocolate texture and flavor to this recipe
  • Eggs and egg yolks-you will just need to whole eggs and two egg yolks for this simple recipe
  • Sugar-for sweetness of course
  • Salt-just a pinch to balance out the sweet
  • Flour-all purpose flour

That is all you need, and the process couldn’t be any easier!!

How to make Chocolate Lava Cake

To make these simple lava cakes, start by first combining the eggs, sugar, salt and flour. This can be done in a mixing bowl with a hand mixer, or I prefer to do it in a stand mixer. Beat until the eggs are fluffy and everything is well combined, about 2-3 minutes.

In a separate bowl, melt the butter in the microwave. While the butter is still warm, stir in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and the milk chocolate chips. Mix until the chocolate is smooth and melted.

Combine the chocolate with the egg mixture, make sure the chocolate mixture is not too hot, you don’t want to scramble the eggs.

Beat until well incorporated.

Pour the batter into 4, 6 ounce ramekins that have been buttered and coated with a dusting of cocoa powder. Place the filled ramekins on a baking sheet, to make transferring to the oven easier, and bake at 350ºF for 12-15 minutes.

Bake the lava cakes until the edges are firm and the center is still soft. The cakes will still jiggly slightly when moved. These lava cakes will not bake all the way through, unless they are left in the oven for too long. You want the cakes to still be soft in the center, so when they are cut open, the center will come spilling out!

Serving Lava Cakes

Serve these lava cakes right when you pull them out of the oven, you want them to still be nice and warm. If needed, run a knife around the edges of the ramekins. Place the plate you will be serving the cake on on top of the ramekin and flip the cake over onto the plate.

Be cautious, the ramekin will be hot and so will the cake. Carefully remove the ramekin, leaving the lava cake on the plate. Top with ice cream, a dusting of powdered sugar, fresh fruit, whipped cream, a drizzle of chocolate or even caramel.

These chocolate lava cakes are so easy to make, taste rich and delicious and always impress!

    5 stars
This is my first attempt at lava cake and it was very yummy. It came together and into bowls in exactly 30 minutes. We ate it with vanilla bean ice cream. Raspberries would have been a nice topping. Bonus-we had all of the ingredients on hand. Yum
