How to make Pretzel Toffee Bark
For the simple instructions head to the recipe card at the bottom of this page. This is just to give additional tips and tricks when making this pretzel bark recipe.
To start line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or even parchment paper, this will make it so much easier to clean up after you are all done making this recipe. I like to spray a little cooking spray on the foil, just to be sure that nothing sticks and the toffee pulls off easily.
Line the prepared baking sheet with a layer of Pretzel Snaps, these are the grid-like pretzels, pictured above. You can use twists or even sticks if that is all the you have on hand, just be sure that they lay in a flat layer on the baking sheet.
Next, make the toffee layer. This is done by melting one cup of butter over medium heat in a saucepan. Add in one cup of brown sugar and stir until the mixture comes to a boil. Allow to boil, stirring occasionally for 3-5 minutes.
I like to check the temperature to make sure that it has reached 275º F with a thermometer. This is the best way that I have found to make sure candies are at the right stage, like when making Homemade Caramels.
If you don’t have a thermometer, you can test the caramel by dropping a few drops of the hot liquid into ice water, then check the consistency of the caramel. You want it to snap apart easily.
When the toffee is done, carefully pour it over the pretzels in the baking sheet. Use a spatula to help spread the toffee over the pretzels. Then bake for just 5 minutes in a 400º F oven. This will help the toffee spread out a little more and stick to the pretzels as it bakes.
For the chocolate layer, sprinkle chocolate chips over the pretzels and place back into the oven for just one minute. Use a spatula to spread the chocolate over all the pretzels.
While the chocolate is still soft, top the pretzel bark with all of your favorite sprinkles, eyeballs, colored candies and chocolates.
Allow to cool completely before breaking into pieces. This can be placed in the refrigerator for 20 minutes to help cool and set the chocolate.
How to Break Apart Halloween Pretzel Bark
Once the chocolate pretzel toffee bark has cooled completely, use a sharp knife to cut the bark into smaller pieces.
You can break the bark apart with your hands to make rough pieces, however be aware that if you have larger candy pieces on there, they might need to be sliced with a knife to break apart.
How to Store Halloween Pretzel Toffee
If you are making this ahead a day or two or you have some leftover, this pretzel toffee can be kept in an airtight container or zip top bag for up to 4 days on the countertop.
This recipe can be frozen if stored in an air tight container for up to 3 months. Place on the countertop to thaw.
