Easy Apple Crisp, What You Need To Know

Apple Crisp is one of our go to dessert recipes for any time of the year, I mean you can buy apples year round! This simple Apple Crips Recipe is ready in just 35 minutes. We like to through it in the oven while we eat dinner and it is warm, delicious and bubbly when we have cleaned up. Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a sweet treat.

Apple Crisp has a crisp oatmeal topping with soft, warm apples as opposed to an Apple Cobbler that has a cake like topping over cooked apples.

Ingredients

  • Apples– sliced apples, go for crisp apples like Gala, Cosmic Crisp, or Granny Smith.
  • Lemon Juice– adds a tangy zip and helps the apples not turn brown
  • Brown Sugar– add sweetness in both the apple and oatmeal crisp topping.
  • All Purpose Flour– thickens the apples and in the oat topping.
  • Oats– regular oats are preferred, but quick oats will work in a pinch.
  • Cinnamon– perfect seasoning for an apple dessert.
  • Nutmeg– another good Fall flavor.
  • Vanilla– good sweet flavor.
  • Butter– I like to use unsalted butter to keep this from becoming too salty.

Tips For Apple Crisp With An Oat Topping

  1. Prepare the Apples– place the sliced apples into a 10.25 inch cast iron skillet. Add in the lemon juice, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Use clean hands or a spatula to mix up the apple slices until they are all coated. Dot the top of the apples with pieces of butter.

  1. Make the Oat Topping– in a separate bowl, combine the regular oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, vanilla, and softened butter. Cut the butter into the oat mixture with a knife or fork and combine until it is all mixed together and clumps have formed. You can even use your hands to make the oatmeal topping. Sprinkle over the apples to the edges.

Can I make Apple Crisp Ahead?

This Simple Apple Crisp Recipe can be made ahead, however, I wouldn’t make it more than a day in advance of when you need it.

  • To make ahead, prepare the apples as instructed and make the oat topping separately. Keep them separate in air tight containers until you are ready to bake. Just before baking, place the apples in the pan and top with the oat topping and bake as instructed.

Can You Freeze Apple Crisp?

Apple Crisp is a perfect dessert to freeze and save for later.

  • To freeze, prepare the apples and oat crumb topping as instructed. Cover the pan with a layer of plastic wrap and then a layer of foil, freeze for up to 3 months. I would suggest making this in a 8×8 inch baking dish and not your skillet if you are freezing.
  • If you want to freeze the apple crisp after baking, allow it to cool completely before covering with plastic wrap and foil.
  • To heat the apple crisp, bake from frozen with the pan loosely covered with foil for about 20 minutes, then remove the foil and bake until bubbly and the crust is golden brown.

The Best Apple For Making Apple Crisp

What are the best apples for making apple crisp? There are varying opinions on which is the best, but I honestly think there are a few choices that will make this perfect every time. You could even mix it up and add in a variety of apples and it will still be delicious.

For this recipe, I used Gala apples, but other varieties that cook great are Granny Smith Apples, Cosmic Crisp, Golden Delicious, or even Honeycrisp.

You can leave the peel on or off depending on personal preference.
