Hamburger Steaks
Hamburger steaks are a perfect way to make a budget friendly meal feel fancy. Dress up simple ground beef with a few simple spices and some W sauce (Worchestershire) for a dinner the whole family will want on the weekly menu on repeat.
It is so easy to make this ground beef recipe a whole meal by serving it over mashed potatoes or egg noodles with a side of your favorite cooked vegetable.
Why Use Cast Iron
Besides the fact that cooking in cast iron will transform you to your grandma’s kitchen and make you feel like a pioneer yourself; cast iron truly is the best cookware.
Cast iron is known for its heat retaining abilities, so it cooks evenly and makes a lovely, crispiness on the outside of these ground beef hamburger steaks. In addition, I love the fact that cast iron, when seasoned correctly, has a non-stick finish which helps make cleaning up a breeze.
With so many reason to love it, cast iron pans have become my go to for making hamburger steaks with onion gravy as well as so many other easy meals, like a good ribeye steak.
Recommended Equipment
- 12 inch Cast Iron Skillet– this is the cast iron pan that I use in my kitchen. I really use it for everything from proteins to breads and even cookies!
- Fish Spatula– or another spatula, I love how wide and thin this spatula is, it makes getting under everything so easy.
How to Make Hamburger Steaks
Get that cast iron heated up and let’s make some delicious hamburger steaks. This is such a simple recipe, I really hope you love it. Here is what you need to do to make this perfect every time.
- Prepare the Hamburger Steaks– place the ground beef into a mixing bowl and season with sea salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Add in the Worcestershire sauce and mix well until combined. Form the meat into 4-5 equal patties.
- Heat the Cast Iron- place a 12-inch cast iron skillet over medium-high heat, and add some oil if needed. Place the prepared hamburger steaks into the pan and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until a nice crust has formed on the outside of the burgers.
- Prepare the Onion Gravy– take the hamburger steaks out of the pan and place them onto a clean plate. If there is a lot of grease in the pan, remove all but one tablespoon of the grease. Add the onions and seasonings to the pan and cook and stir for 3-4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add in the flour and stir for a minute, then slowly stir in the Worcestershire sauce (yes more W sauce, it adds so much flavor) and beef broth and stir until the gravy thickens.
- Add Back in the Hamburger Steaks– add the steaks back into the cast iron skillet and cook in the gravy for about 3-4 minutes, until the steaks reach 160º F. To test the temperature use an instant read thermometer.
Sides for Hamburger Steaks
Hamburger steaks are not really like a classic hamburger, so these can be served with much more than french fries. We like to eat these onion gravy and hamburger steaks over mashed potatoes, egg noodles or even rice.
Serve them with a simple cooked vegetable, like green beans, broccoli or asparagus for a quick meal.
How to Store
If you have leftover hamburger steaks, place them into an air tight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. These can also be frozen for up to 3 months.
