How to Cook Sweet Potatoes In The Oven

Sweet Potatoes Sliced and Baked

This recipe for sliced and baked sweet potatoes is perfect for meal prepping. Bake a bunch of sliced sweet potatoes at once and have them ready for the rest of the week.

It is so easy to make these simple baked sweet potatoes, really the oven does all of the heavy lifting in making these perfect every time.

Ingredients

This is what you will need to make oven-baked sweet potato halves.

  • Sweet Potatoes: the orange sweet potatoes are what I used to make these oven-roasted sweet potatoes. This recipe will also work with yams or even Japanese sweet potatoes.
  • Cooking Oil: used to coat the outside of the sweet potatoes, avocado oil, olive oil, vegetable oil, coconut oil or even a cooking oil spray will work
  • Sea Salt: sprinkle sea salt all over the top of the sweet potatoes before baking

How to Cook Sweet Potato Slices in the Oven

Let’s walk through the simple steps to make perfectly, soft, sweet baked sweet potatoes in the oven.

  1. Wash and Slice Sweet Potatoes: thoroughly wash the outside of the sweet potatoes. Use a sharp kitchen knife to carefully slice the sweet potatoes into two halves, cutting lengthwise.
  2. Prepare Baking Pan: line a baking sheet with parchment paper, this will really help with clean up as the potatoes can make a sticky mess when baking.
  3. Oil the Sweet Potatoes: place the sliced sweet potatoes onto the parchment paper and drizzle with cooking oil. Rub the oil on all sides of the sweet potatoes. Sprinkle with sea salt
  4. Bake the Sweet Potatoes: Heat the oven to 400º F and bake the sweet potatoes for 20-35 minutes, depending on the thickness of your potatoes.

Tips for Baking Sweet Potatoes

Test to see if the sweet potatoes are done by poking with a fork or a knife. The fork should slide easily into the sweet potato flesh.

If you have sweet potatoes that are different thicknesses, check the doneness of the potatoes and remove any of the smaller potatoes when they are done cooking. Leave the larger sweet potatoes in the oven to bake until they are soft.

How to Serve Oven Baked Sweet Potatoes

I’m going to be honest, you don’t need to top these sweet potatoes with anything, they are perfectly sweet and delicious on their own! That being said, you can top these with a little butter, cinnamon, and sugar to really take them to another level.

For meal prepping, we like to have these throughout the week as an addition in taco meat, chili, slice, and put in a salad or serve as a side to your protein of choice.

Ingredients

  • 5 sweet potatoes
  • 1-2 tablespoons avocado oil or other cooking oil
  • 1-2 teaspoons sea salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400º F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Wash and dry sweet potatoes. Using a sharp kitchen knife, slice the sweet potatoes into halves lengthwise.
  • Place the sliced sweet potatoes, cut side down onto the prepared baking sheet. Drizzle with oil and rub on all sides of the potatoes. Sprinkle with sea salt.
  • Bake the sweet potatoes for 20-35 minutes, depending on the thickness of the sweet potatoes
  • Test the sweet potatoes by poking with a fork or sharp knife, if it slides easily into the flesh, the potatoes are done.
