This Orange Rolls Recipe is a sweet, soft roll filled with a buttery, sugary orange filling topped with an orange vanilla glaze. These sweet rolls are ready in an hour and are so easy to make!! Make some delicious memories with this recipe!!
Orange Rolls were always on my Grandma’s table whenever we would visit for dinner and they are still one of my personal favorites! My fam looks forward to these on holidays, Sunday dinners or really any other time I feel like making a batch.
I like to use a quick acting yeast to make the rising process go much quicker. They turn out just as pillowy and soft, just make sure to give them warmth and time to rise.
Ingredients
Rolls:
- flour-all purpose flour works great in this recipe
- yeast-instant dry yeast is preferred for a quicker rise time.
- eggs
- butter
- sugar
- water
- salt
Filling:
- butter
- sugar
- zest of one orange
Icing:
- powdered sugar
- milk
- butter
- cream cheese
- vanilla
- orange juice
- orange zest
Instructions
First combine 4 cups of the flour, all of the sugar, salt and yeast in the bowl of your stand mixer, or a large mixing bowl if mixing by hand. The instant dry yeast can be combined directly with the flour, sugar and salt, whisk to combine.
Next, add in the softened butter and mix with the hook in the stand mixer or by hand until it is broken up into small pieces.
Beat the eggs together and add to the roll mixture, stir to combine. Lastly, add in the warm water. You want it pretty warm, almost hot at 120-150ºF. Mix the water into the dough and continue mixing until a sticky dough is formed.
If you need to add more flour, do that at this point. You want the dough to pull away from the sides of the mixing bowl and not be too sticky to handle. Continue mixing/kneading for about 5 minutes.
Remove the dough from the bowl to a clean, floured surface. Cover with a towel and allow to rest for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes, divide the dough into two pieces. Beginning with one piece, roll the dough out into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick.
Combine the ingredients for the filling and spread all over the rolled out rectangle. Roll up the dough from one long side, tightly rolling the dough to the other end. Slice the rolled up dough first in half, then slice the two halves in half again, working in halves until all the rolls are sliced.
Each half of dough should make 8 large rolls or 16 small rolls.
Place the rolls, cut side down in a greased muffin tin or baking sheet. Cover with a towel, or plastic wrap that has been sprayed with cooking spray to prevent the dough from sticking; allow to rise in a warm place for at least 30 minutes.
Bake in a 400ºF oven for 12-15 minutes, until they are golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes before glazing with the frosting. These are so good served warm!!
Tips
- Instant Dry Yeast allows these to rise a lot faster, if you prefer to use regular yeast, please plan for at least an extra 2 hours of rising time. You will need to let it rise after mixing the dough, then roll out and cut and let rise again before baking.
- Once the dough has been shaped into rolls to rise make sure they are in a warm place. You can place them in the sun coming through a window, or just on a countertop if your home is warm enough.
- A simple way to create a warm, rising environment is to turn your oven to the warm setting and allow it to come to temperature and then turn it off. Place your covered roll pans in the warm oven and they will quickly rise.
