This easy waffle recipe has been in the family for years. Judging by the handwriting on the recipe card, I think it is one of my brother’s and probably a recipe he made in a middle school cooking class.
Regardless, this sour cream waffle recipe has become a favorite at our house. These waffles are perfectly crisp on the outside with a soft waffle center.
We love to pile these fluffy waffles up with all of our favorite fruits and whipped cream, that’s just how a waffle should be enjoyed!!

How to make Waffle Batter
Are you ready to make the best homemade waffle recipe? Here’s how to make these simple waffles:
- The first thing you are going to do is separate the egg whites and the egg yolks into two medium sized mixing bowl.
- Beat the egg whites with an electric mixer until they are white and form stiff peaks (as pictured above)
- In the other mixing bowl to the egg yolks, add in the milk, sour cream, vanilla and melted butter. Mix to combine.
- Next, sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt into the egg yolk bowl and stir or mix with the electric mixer to combine. The batter will be a bit lumpy and that is okay, do not over mix.
- Lastly, using a spatula, fold in the beaten egg whites into the batter. Scrape the sides of the bowl and fold the batter over the egg whites until they are incorporated.
To cook the waffles, scoop out about 1/3 cup of waffle batter into the center of a heated and greased waffle iron. Close the waffle iron and if yours has a self timer on it that you trust, wait until that goes off.
Otherwise, the best way to tell if your waffle is done cooking is to watch the steam from the waffle iron. When there is no longer steam coming from the waffle iron, you know your waffle in done.
If you like a softer waffle, be sure to lessen the cooking time and if you want it more crisp, cook longer.
