Mashed Potatoes

Mashed Potatoes are on of our family’s favorite foods! Always on the table with our Sunday roast or a staple side dish at Thanksgiving and other Holiday get togethers. Making Mashed Potatoes couldn’t be any easier. Let’s walk through a few simple steps that will get you the best mashed potatoes every time.

How long to boil potatoes for mashed potatoes

Ok, so there a few factors that will affect how long you will need to boil your potatoes for this mashed potato recipe. First, being the type of potatoes you use. For this particular recipe for mashed potatoes I like to use Idaho Russet Potatoes. They are hearty and cook up nicely.

Second, the size you boil your potatoes will also affect how long you will need to boil the potatoes. Peel the potatoes and slice into about 1 inch pieces. Try to get them all about the same size, that way they will all cook evenly and you won’t be waiting for some to cook while others get over cooked.

The potatoes should only take about 15-20 minutes from boiling to cook.

How to tell when potatoes are done

To check if your potatoes are done and ready to mash, pierce a piece of potato with a fork. If the fork easily slides into the potato then you are ready to drain the water and mash the potatoes.

How to mash potatoes

Drain the water from the potatoes by pouring the potatoes into a colander and place in a large mixing bowl. Mash the potatoes using a potato masher or an electric mixer.  Mash the potatoes just a few times and then add in the butter, half of the milk and half of the sour cream. Continue mashing adding in milk and sour cream as needed to make the potatoes smooth and creamy.

Season with salt and pepper as desired. Mash the potatoes until no more lumps remain and you have added in the sour cream and milk. Do not over mix the potatoes as they can become gummy and sticky if they are overworked.

Place the mashed potatoes into a serving bowl and top with butter and chopped parsley before serving, optional of course, but makes it look so pretty!

Can I make Mashed Potatoes ahead and Reheat?

You can absolutely make mashed potatoes ahead and reheat. To make ahead, follow the recipe as written. Allow to cool and place into an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

To reheat the potatoes you can:

  1. Place them in a slow cooker and set on low and cook for 3 hours or high for 1-2 (this also frees up your oven if you are preparing a holiday meal)
  2. Place in a 9 x 13 inch baking dish, cover with foil and place in a 350ºF oven for 20-30 minutes until heated through
  3. Heat up in the microwave for 10 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes until heated through

You can also freeze this mashed potato recipe for up to 3 months. Just cool after making the recipe and place in zip top bags and press flat to freeze.
