Baking in a Cast Iron Skillet

Why would you bake in a cast iron skillet? Some people have to wonder, why not just use a regular cake pan or baking dish? Baking cookie dough in a cast iron skillet is the best, the cookie comes out with a perfectly golden brown, crisp crust while the center is soft and chewy.

I think that cast iron skillets are for more than just making the perfect steak. They are perfect for making simple desserts like this Christmas skillet sugar cookie, a berry crisp, or even this monster cookie.

How to make Christmas Sprinkle Cookie in a Skillet

This skillet cookie recipe comes together quick and is easy to make. Let me walk you through the simple steps to make this cookie magic happen:

  1. Make the cookie dough: start making the dough by creaming together the butter, brown sugar, sugar, eggs and vanilla. This can be done by hand or with an electric mixer. Mix until smooth and no lumps remain.
  2. Add the dry ingredients: sift the dry ingredients into the butter mixture and mix by hand or with a mixer until a soft dough is formed.

  1. Mix in the sprinkles: after the dough is mixed, add in the sprinkles and white chocolate chips and mix to incorporate into the cookie dough.
  2. Spread into the skillet: spread the cookie dough evenly into a well greased 12 inch cast iron skillet (or a 9 x 13 inch baking dish). Add more sprinkles and white chocolate chips to the top of the cookie for decoration as desired.
  3. Bake: place the skillet cookie into a 350º F oven and bake until golden brown and cooked through, this will take about 25-30 minutes. Check the center by inserting a toothpick, if it comes out clean the cookie is done.

How to Serve and Storage

As I mentioned above, this skillet cookie is delicious with a scoop of your favorite Christmas ice cream flavor, some fresh whipped cream, or top with cream cheese frosting.

We love to eat this cookie with a mug of hot chocolate or even homemade wassil for a warm evening treat.

Store any leftovers of this Christmas sugar cookie in an air tight container on the counter for up to 3 days. I do not recommend keeping the cookie in your cast iron skillet for storage.

The cookie can also be frozen in individual slices for up to 3 months in a sealed bag or container.
