I really enjoyed experimenting making crackers to come up with this flavorful and easy recipe for Cheese Crackers. The smell of buttery, bubbling cheese permeated our home as they baked and became crunchy and delicious in the oven. You can taste a touch of garlic, so much cheese and these have the perfect crunch with every bite. Homemade crackers are now going to be a regular thing around here.

How to make Homemade Cheese Crackers

The steps to make these Homemade Cheese Crackers are few and simple. Follow my simple tips and tricks to get cheesy, crunchy crackers every time.

  • Start by combining together in a mixing bowl the flour, garlic powder and onion powder
  • Add in 8 ounces of grated Sharp Cheddar Cheese. Using Sharp Cheddar will give the cheesiest flavor to these crackers. If you would like, experiment with other cheese flavors to find a combination you just love.
  • Grate in the 1/4 cup of cold butter and stir to get everything coated in the flour mixture.

  • At this point, I like to put all of the ingredients into a food processor, or blender and then add in the water. Pulse the food processor until the dough forms really small balls.
  • Pour the dough out onto piece of parchment paper.
  • Using your hands, knead the dough until it becomes a smooth ball
  • Roll one half of the dough out very thin on the parchment paper. The dough should be paper thin, you can almost see right through it. Thinner is better and will make crunchy crackers.
  • Transfer the dough to a baking sheet and using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the crackers into one inch pieces. Do not worry about separating the crackers at this point, that is easier to do after they are cooked.

  • Using the round back of a wooden skewer stick, poke small holes in the center of each cracker.
  • Sprinkle the cracker dough with sea salt before placing in the oven to bake.
  • Bake the crackers for 12-15 minutes, until they are golden and bubbly
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool before breaking apart. To break the crackers apart, carefully drop the pan, or if they are being stubborn and sticking together, take a sharp knife and slice them apart if needed,

How to Store Homemade Crackers

To store these homemade crackers, allow them to cool completely. The crackers (if there are any left) should be stored in an air tight container or even zip top bag. Be sure to keep the crackers in a dry place, any moisture will make the crackers soften.

Homemade crackers will last about a week. Since these are made without preservatives they will not keep for longer than a week. They can become stale and lose flavor as time goes by.

Cheese Crackers Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1/4 cup butter, cold
  • 1 tablespoon cold water
  • 2 teaspoons sea salt, for sprinkling on dough

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350º F
  • In a large mixing bowl combine together flour, garlic powder and onion powder
  • Add in grated cheese
  • Grate in the cold butter and stir to coat everything in the flour mixture
  • Transfer to a food processor and add in the cold water. Pulse the dough until very small balls form and all ingredients are mixed together.
  • Pour the dough out onto a parchment paper. Roll the dough out until it is paper thin
  • Transfer the parchment paper with the dough to a baking sheet. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the dough into 1 inch pieces. Sprinkle with sea salt
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes, until the crackers have browned a little and the cheese is bubbly.
  • Allow to cool, then break the crackers by dropping the pan or slicing with a knife if they are still sticking together.

Notes

  • To store the baked crackers, allow to cool completely before placing into an air tight container. Store in a cool, dry place for up to one week
