Creamed Tuna and peas on toast is one of those recipes that reminds me of my own childhood. My mom would make this recipe all of the time, but instead of serving it over toast, she would serve it over cooked puff pastry, exactly how I make it here.
This always made it feel like such a fancy meal, that puff pastry takes creamed tuna up a notch! This is also a perfect comfort food recipe.
How to make Creamed Tuna
This cream tuna recipe is so easy to make, just takes a few minutes and a few ingredients. To start, prepare the puff pastry. Puff pastry sheets are found in the freezer section of the grocery store and will need to thaw before baking.
To thaw the puff pastry, take out one sheet and let it sit out on the countertop for about 30 minutes, until it unfolds easily.
Once it has thawed and is easy to handle, slice into 6 equal pieces with a sharp knife or a pizza cutter. Place the pastry pieces onto a baking sheet and cook in a 400 F oven for 13-15 minutes, until they are golden brown and puffed up.
Doesn’t that just look so much better than a piece of toast? The puff pastry really adds so much to this dish, not only in flavor, but texture as well, it is the best part.
However, if toast is your preference or what you have on hand definitely go ahead and use that!
While the puff pastry is cooking in the oven, work on preparing the creamed tuna sauce.
To make the creamed tuna, start by melting the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the butter has melted stir in the flour, salt and black pepper.
Stir this mixture frequently until it is smooth and there are no lumps of flour. Next, while still stirring frequently, slowly pour in the milk.
Bring the sauce to a slow boil and continue to stir until it has thickened. This will take 3-5 minutes.
Lastly for this creamy tuna gravy, add in the peas and two cans of tuna in water that have been drained. Stir until everything is well combined and heated through. Turn the heat down to low if you are going to keep the creamed tuna warm, stir occasionally.
How to Serve Creamed Tuna
To serve this creamed tuna over toast or, in this case, puff pastry. Take one piece of puff pastry and simply pull it into two halves. I like to stack the puff pastry on top of itself, or you can put two halves next to each other on the plate.
Spoon as much of the creamed tuna as your heart feels is right over the pieces of puff pastry. Top with some freshly chopped parsley if desired.
