Ingredients for Chicken and Gravy

This simple chicken and gravy comes together with basic pantry ingredients. Here is what you will need:

  • 3 cups shredded chicken– use up leftover chicken, rotisserie chicken or cook and shred chicken breasts.
  • 1/2 cup butter– the base to this chicken recipe. The fat from the butter adds a rich flavor
  • 1-2 sprigs thyme– fresh thyme is cooked with the melted butter to add a beautiful herby flavor
  • 1/2 cup flour– used to thicken the gravy to a rich consistency
  • 4 cups chicken broth-homemade or store bought, this is what brings the gravy to life
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder-used to add a nice rounded flavor
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)-highly recommend adding this to the gravy, it adds a nice taste
  • salt and black pepper to taste

How to Make Chicken Gravy with Chicken Broth

If you haven’t ever made homemade chicken gravy with chicken broth, don’t be intimidated, this recipe really couldn’t be any easier!

collage of steps to make chicken gravy

Step 1: Start with a big pan, this will make about 4 cups of gravy. I love cooking in my enameled cast iron pan because it distributes the heat so evenly.

Step 2: Melt the butter in the pan and add in the sprigs of thyme. Just stir the thyme around in the melted butter and allow it took cook until it becomes fragrant. After a minute, remove the thyme sprigs from the butter and discard. It is okay if a few thyme leaves are left in the butter.

Step 3: Stir the flour into the butter and stir until it is combined with the butter, it will be thick almost like dough.

Step 4: Whisk in the chicken broth and stir until there are no more lumps and the gravy is smooth. Bring the gravy to a simmer and stir until the gravy thickens, continue stirring.

Step 5: Season with the salt, pepper, garlic powder and Worcestershire sauce. Add in the shredded chicken and stir until it is heated through. Serve this deliciousness over warm mashed potatoes, rice, or biscuits.

Serving Suggestions

This easy chicken and gravy recipe pairs perfectly with:

  • Mashed Potatoes– potatoes and gravy, the ultimate comfort food combo
  • Buttermilk Biscuits-another comfort combo, biscuits and gravy
  • Roasted Vegetables-these are easy to make and are a great side dish to potatoes and gravy
  • Egg Noodles-soft, thin noodles covered in gravy is never a bad idea

Tips for the Best Chicken and Gravy

  • Use Homemade or Low-Sodium Chicken Broth – For the best flavor and to control salt levels.
  • Make it Creamy – Add ¼ cup heavy cream for an extra rich and creamy texture.
  • Want More Flavor – Stir in a splash of soy sauce or red pepper flakes for depth.
  • Thicker Gravy – Let the gravy simmer longer or add a cornstarch slurry (1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp cold water), and simmer until thick.

Storage and Leftovers

  • Refrigerator: Store leftover chicken and gravy in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer: Freeze in a sealed container for up to 3 months.
  • Reheating: Warm over medium-low heat on the stovetop, adding a splash of chicken broth if needed.

FAQs About Chicken and Gravy Recipe

Can I Make This Chicken Gravy Without Flour?

Yes! Use cornstarch instead. Mix 2 tbsp cornstarch with 3 tbsp cold water, then whisk it into the simmering broth to thicken. Let it simmer for about 1 minute while stirring.

Can I Use Beef Broth Instead?

For a richer, deeper flavor, you can swap chicken broth with beef broth or even use a mix of both. This will definitely alter the flavor. If you would like a more beef flavor, check out my recipe for Hamburger Steaks in Gravy.

How Do I Make This in a Slow Cooker?

  • Combine all ingredients (except flour and butter) in a slow cooker.
  • Cook on LOW for 4-6 hours or until the flavors blend.
  • Thicken the gravy by stirring in a cornstarch and water slurry (see above) paste at the end of cooking.

This recipe was very good. I used roasted chicken breasts with the potatoes and gravy as a side for presentation bit we were all eating it together anyway. The trick with the thyme in the butter, then removing added flavor was great and I will be using it again in other recipes.

    1. I’m so happy you enjoyed it!! Thanks so much for taking the time to come back and leave a comment and review, I really appreciate it!

  3. Can We put 1/2 to 1 tsp of dried thyme into the butter instead of the 1-2 sprigs it calls for? I know it says to remove the tyme sprigs and if I use the dried time I won’t be able to take it out of the mixture… Thanks for your time….
