biscuits and gravy

Biscuits and Sausage gravy is pure comfort food! This is one of those recipes my husband loves to order whenever we go out for breakfast, but truly, it is so much better when you make it yourself. There really aren’t a lot of things better than a biscuit fresh out of the oven topped with this warm gravy! You are going to love it!!

Ingredients for Sausage Gravy

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage- I buy the kind in the tube, that is ground and ready to cook.
  • 2 tbsp all purpose flour- helps thicken the gravy
  • 2 cups milk- any kind will work with this recipe, I used 1%
  • salt and pepper

Easy steps to make sausage gravy

In a 12 inch skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until it is cooked through and browned. You want it to be a little crispy on the outside, it adds texture and a nice flavor to the sausage. This will take 2-3 minutes.

Once the sausage is nice and browned, leave it in the pan for the next step. Do not drain any of the grease out of the pan, unless you think there is too much. You want at least 2 tablespoons of grease in the pan.

Season the sausage with salt and pepper. Add in the flour and stir to coat all of the sausage with flour, cook and stir for a minute to let the flour cook a bit.

Pour in the milk and stir it in using a whisk to make sure no lumps of flour form in the pan. Turn the heat up to medium high again to get the milk boiling. Continue stirring. As the milk boils, it will begin to thicken. Cook and stir for another minute until it is to your desired thickness.

Serve the gravy warm over fresh biscuits.

To store leftovers, place in an airtight container and place in the refrigerator. This sausage gravy will be good in the fridge for up to 4 days. Simply reheat in the microwave or in a pan on the stove.
