How to make Pizza Dough

This recipe for homemade pizza dough can all be mixed by hand, no need for an electric or stand mixer, but you can definitely make it that way if you prefer.

Follow these simple steps to make pizza dough:

  • Start with fresh ingredients, this is very important for taste as well as how well the dough will raise and bake.
  • First, in a large mixing bowl, combine together the warm water, olive oil, yeast and sugar
yeast with water and olive oil in a mixing bowl
  • If you are using instant yeast, you don’t need to proof the yeast, add in 2 cups of flour and the salt.
  • Mix together with a wooden spoon until a ball is formed with the dough, add in the remaining flour a tablespoon at a time as needed.
  • The dough will be soft, but not sticky.

  • Place the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-6 minutes, until soft. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or place back into a greased mixing bowl and cover. Allow to rise for 30-45 minutes.
  • Once the dough has risen, doubled in size. Remove it from the bowl and cut into two, equal pieces.
  • Working with one half at a time, place the other back into the covered bowl. I like to use a rolling pin to start rolling the dough out into a large circle.

Making Homemade Pizza

  • If you are confident in your pizza tossing skills, you can first press the dough out from the center, creating the edges. Then pick the dough up and pull from the center, letting gravity pull it down and stretch it out as your rotate it around your hands
  • This dough will form 2, 10-12 inch pizzas. Please note that if you want a thinner pizza, be sure to roll out a thin dough as this dough will rise when it is baked.
  • Once the dough is rolled out, place on a baking sheet or into a 10 inch cast iron pan. Spread sauce over the dough and top with your favorite toppings.
  • Bake in a 450º F oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is golden and bubbly.

  • 2 1/4 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2-2 1/2 cups all purpose flour

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, or stand mixer, combine together the water, olive oil, yeast and sugar. Mix to combine.

  • Place the dough back into a greased mixing bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and allow to rise for 30-45 minutes.
  • Punch down the dough and cut into two equal halves. Cover the half you are not working with to keep it from drying out.

  • Place into a 10 inch cast iron pan or onto a greased baking sheet. Roll up around the edges to form the crust. Just roll the edges towards the center of the circle.
  • Top with pizza sauce, cheese and your favorite toppings. If desired, brush the crust with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic salt.
  • Bake in a 450º F oven for 15-20 minutes, until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted.
