If you are in Utah, you are familiar with the name Leatherby’s Ice Cream. We love that place and we are obsessed with their caramel sauce, it is so good…but just a little pricey to purchase a whole jar. So, I came up with my own recipe that only has 4 ingredients and is just as delicious!
How to make Caramel Sauce
To make this easy caramel sauce recipe, start by melting the butter in a medium sized sauce pan over medium-high heat.
Once the butter is melted add in the brown sugar, cream and vanilla. Continue stirring until the sugar is dissolved and well incorporated.
Allow the caramel sauce to come up to a boil and keep on medium-high heat. Stir frequently until the sauce begins to thicken to a syrup-like consistency.
This will take about 3-4 minutes. I like to test my caramel by dipping a cold spoon into the sauce and running my finger along the back to see if the sauce runs together where my finger was or if it stays in place on the spoon.
Remove the caramel sauce from the heat and allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before pouring into another container.
How to store Homemade Caramel Sauce
I like to keep my homemade caramel sauce in glass jars. Before pouring the hot caramel sauce into the jars, make sure to run them under hot water to heat them up and prevent breaking. Place the jar in a clean sink and carefully pour the caramel into the jar.
If you only have plastic containers, wait until the caramel sauce cools to room temperature before pouring into plastic, you don’t want it to melt.
Store any unused caramel sauce in the refrigerator, it will keep for up to 2 weeks in an air tight container.
How to heat up caramel sauce
If stored in a glass jar, you can simply place it in the microwave for 30-60 seconds until heated through.
You can also transfer it back to your sauce pan and heat up over low heat.

Can this sauce be “canned” and if so for how long and what pressure…
I have not tried to can this caramel sauce, it never lasts that long around here. Sorry I don’t have that information.
