Grilled Shrimp
Grilled shrimp is one of my favorite go to proteins. Shrimp is easy to cook and seriously cooks up so fast!! It is easy to add flavor to shrimp when grilling like in this Teriyaki Shrimp Skewers recipe, you just brush on the teriyaki and boom, delicious, flavorful shrimp in under 20 minutes.
Shrimp is also really easy to keep on hand. I usually just buy the bags of large or jumbo frozen shrimp and keep them in the freezer. The thaw super quick by placing them in a colander and running under some cold water for a few minutes.
Ingredients for Shrimp Skewers
For this recipe let’s start with what you will need to make the homemade teriyaki sauce. There are just a few ingredients and hopefully these are all items you already have stored in your pantry. If not, stock up, these are items that can be used in so many recipes, like this delicious stir fry sauce.
- soy sauce– low sodium or coconut aminos can be substituted in this recipe
- water
- brown sugar
- garlic cloves
- fresh ginger
- sesame oil
- rice vinegar
- red pepper flakes
- shrimp– I like to use large or jumbo shrimp that have already been peeled and the vein removed.
- wooden or metal skewers– if using wooden skewers, be sure to soak for at least 30 minutes before threading shrimp onto the skewers
Grilling Shrimp Skewers
To make this easy recipe of teriyaki shrimp skewers, place the shrimp into a bowl and pour about half of the teriyaki sauce into the bowl with the shrimp. Allow the shrimp to soak up the sauce for about 10 minutes.
Thread the shrimp onto the skewers, I usually place about 6 shrimp on each skewer. Grill the shrimp on your outdoor grill, or indoor grill pan over medium-high heat.
Grilling shrimp on skewers helps prevent the shrimp from slipping through the grill grates and makes it so easy to flip to grill the other side.
Cook the shrimp for about 3 minutes per side. The shrimp is done when it turns pink and the tail curls in a bit.
Using a kitchen brush, brush some of the remaining teriyaki sauce over both sides of the shrimp and cook for just a minute longer.
Remove from the grill to a clean serving platter and garnish with some sesame seeds and chopped green onions.
Thicken Teriyaki Sauce
If you would like to serve the remaining teriyaki sauce with the shrimp, you can serve it as is, or it is really easy to thicken.
Add one teaspoon of cornstarch to the teriyaki sauce and mix to combine. Pour the sauce into a small saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Turn down the heat to a simmer and continue to stir the sauce until it thickens.
