The Best Sugar Cookie Recipe

The best sugar cookie, in my opinion, is soft and fluffy in the center, not dry, but melts away in your mouth with every bite. Topped with a simple buttercream or cream cheese frosting this is the perfect sugar cookie recipe for all your favorite holidays!

How to Make Homemade Sugar Cookies

This is a pretty basic sugar cookie recipe that is easy to mix together, cut out and pop in the oven to bake. Let’s go over the steps to make this simple cookie dough:

  • First start by mixing together the softened butter, eggs, sugar, vanilla and milk. I like to do this in my stand mixer, add in all of the ingredients and turn it on to medium speed. Let it mix for about 1 minute, until everything is combined. It will be very liquidy.
  • Next, add in the dry ingredients; salt, flour, baking soda and baking powder. I actually just add this right into the mixing bowl with the wet ingredients and mix them all together until a dough has formed.
    • scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to make sure it is incorporated

Rolling Out Cookie Dough

On a clean, floured surface roll out the cookie dough with a rolling pin until it is a quarter inch thick adding more flour as needed to prevent sticking. Then you can use your favorite cookie cutter to press into the cookie dough and cut out your cookies.

I have this big bin of almost every cookie shape you could think of that is perfect for making christmas cookies, valentines cookies or really any holiday cookie shape.

Place your cut out cookies onto a parchment lined baking sheet or, just directly onto the baking sheet, and bake for 8-10 minutes at 350ºF.

I like to just underbake the cookies so they are still really moist and soft in the center. To do this I gently press the center of a cookie after 8 minutes to see if it presses in easily and that the sides are just a little crisp.

Remove the cookies from the oven and transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely before frosting.

I like to do a little double cookie surprise when I am making these for holidays. To do this, pipe a layer of frosting just around the edge of the cookie design and fill the center with candies and sprinkles. Place another decorated cookie on top so that the candies are sandwiched between the two cookies.

The best part is the surprise when the fam breaks these open and finds a little extra treat inside.
