Are you ready to make the easiest homemade bread of your life? I have tested and re-tested this recipe numerous times to make sure you can easily make it and it comes out just right.

Cooking bread in a cast iron skillet helps keep the temperature nice and even in the oven while creating the perfect crust on the outside of the bread.

This skillet bread recipe is similar to my no knead dutch oven bread recipe. The only differences are how they are baked and the texture of the bread when it is done.

If you are looking for a more artisan, crunchy bread give the dutch oven bread a try.

Reasons to Love this Recipe

Easy and comes together quick, no need to be a professional bread baker to bake up the perfect loaf.
Baking and rising time is all that’s need and can be done in about 90 minutes.
Perfect for serving on the table with any meal.

Ingredients for Cast Iron Bread

Like I stated above, you only need 6 ingredients to make this easy homemade bread recipe. These are all things you most likely already have on hand in your home.

  • All purpose flour
  • Yeast– instant or rapid rise yeast is what is used in this recipe, this helps the bread rise quickly without having to knead and have two separate rise times.
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Butter
  • Water– the water should be warmer to the touch than is comfortable, but not burning. Around 115-120º F when measured with an instant read thermometer.

How to Make Cast Iron Skillet Bread Recipe

Make the Dough

  • In a large mixing bowl or stand mixer, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
  • Add in the water and butter, and mix with a wooden spoon or dough hook until a soft dough is formed. The dough should pull easily away from the sides of the mixing bowl. Add additional flour, one tablespoon at a time as needed.
  • Continue to mix or knead in the bowl for 2-3 minutes, until the dough is soft and a nice, round ball is formed.
  • Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and allow to rise in a warm area for at least 1 hour.
  • Pull the dough from the bowl and place onto a clean, floured surface. Knead the dough into a ball again by folding in the sides and pulling the dough towards yourself on the counter. You can also turn the dough in a circle to help it form a nice ball shape.

Bake the Bread

Place the dough into a well greased 12 inch cast iron skillet.

Bake the bread in a 400º F oven for 30-35 minutes, until the dough is golden brown and it makes a hollow sound when you tap on the outside.

Remove the bread from the oven and brush with melted butter. Place on a cooling rack to cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

I have a favorite knife that works so good for slicing this thick, fresh bread. If you are in need of a new bread knife, this is the one I recommend.

There really is nothing quite like the smell of fresh baked bread, or a slice of warm white bread with a slather of homemade honey butter.

Storage Instructions

If you happen to have any of this bread leftover it can be stored in an air tight container or zip top bag on the countertop for 3-4 days.

Be sure to allow your bread to cool before placing into a container so extra moisture doesn’t build up inside with the bread.

What to Serve With Homemade Bread

Serve this warm bread right on the table with a warm bowl of chicken soup, chili, creamy alfredo, a cold salad or with some homemade strawberry jam.
