This easy recipe for Broccoli Casserole came straight out of my mom’s old, metal recipe box. I just love sifting through those old recipes and finding golden gems like this one. This recipe is a classic and my family just loved the cream cheese with the broccoli and the crunchy parmesan, breadcrumb topping. So good!!! Ingredients to make Broccoli Casserole

Nothing too out of the ordinary is required for this recipe, these are probably ingredients you already keep handy. For this broccoli recipe you will need the following:

  • broccoli- you will need about 2 pounds, simply cut into smaller, bite sized pieces. 
  • cream cheese- bring it to room temperature so that it is soft enough to work with and mix with other ingredients
  • milk
  • lemon juice and lemon zest
  • ground ginger
  • bread crumbs-plain, store bought or homemade
  • parmesan cheese
  • butter
  • salt and pepper

How to make Broccoli Casserole

Ready to try your chef’s hat on and make this simple side dish recipe? Here are the step by step instructions; you can also scroll to the bottom of this page for the printable recipe. 

  1. Start by preparing the broccoli by washing and chopping into smaller, bite sized pieces. Steam the broccoli on the stove or in a covered dish with water in the microwave for 5-7 minutes.
  2. Place the broccoli into a greased casserole dish or 7 x 11 baking dish. 
  3. In a separate bowl or large measuring cup stir the cream cheese until it is smooth. Add in the milk, lemon juice, lemon zest, ginger, salt and pepper. Stir until well combined. 
  4. Pour the cream mixture over the broccoli and stir to coat evenly. 
  5. Combine the bread crumbs, milk and parmesan cheese. Sprinkle over the top of the broccoli. 
  6. Bake at 350ºF for 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and the bread crumbs are toasted and browned.

Can I make Broccoli Casserole Ahead?

This recipe is best made just before serving, so I suggest you do not make this recipe ahead. If you need to make some shortcuts for time purposes, you can chop and steam the broccoli a few days ahead to cut down on a little time.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs broccoli, chopped into bite sized pieces
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened at room temperature
  • 8 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Bread Crumb Topping

  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup parmesan, grated
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF and grease a casserole dish or 7 x 11 inch baking dish
  • Steam broccoli for 5-7 minutes, until dark green and tender. Place in the prepared baking dish.
  • Place cream cheese in a bowl and stir until smooth. Add in the milk, lemon zest, lemon juice, ginger, salt and pepper. Stir to combine.
  • Pour cream mixture over the broccoli and mix to coat.

Bread Crumb Topping

  • In a bowl, combine the bread crumbs, parmesan and melted butter. Stir until the bread crumbs have all been coated in butter.
  • Top the broccoli with the bread crumbs.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes, until the bread crumbs are toasted and the cream mixture is bubbly.
