Ingredients for Garlic Rolls

To make these super tasty garlic rolls, I start with the same dough recipe I use to make Homemade Pizza. For the dough you will need the following, basic, ingredients:

  • Water– the water should be warm to the touch, not hot. If you are measuring the temperature with an instant read thermometer (which I highly recommend) the water should not be between 120-125º F.
  • Instant Yeast-instant yeast is so easy to use. No need to proof the yeast with water, it can be mixed right in with the flour and takes half the time to rise. This Saf Instant is the brand I always use in baking.
  • Olive Oil
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • All Purpose Flour

For the Garlic Butter you will need:

  • Butter– I like to use unsalted butter so that I can control the amount of salt in this dish
  • Dried Parsley
  • Grated Parmesan
  • Garlic Powder

Combine together the ingredients for the garlic butter in a mixing bowl with an electric mixer. This can be done by hand if you prefer, I just feel that using the electric mixer makes a smoother garlic butter.

Lastly, you will just need some grated mozzarella to make these rolls extra cheesy.

How to Make Cheesy Garlic Rolls

Making these garlic rolls is pretty quick and easy, don’t be intimidated by making the dough if you aren’t much of a baker, this dough is super simple.

To make the dough:

First, place 2 cups of the flour, sugar, salt and yeast into a large mixing bowl or bowl of a stand mixer. Add in the water and olive oil. Mix the dough until it is well combined.

If you feel that the dough is too sticky, add in additional flour a few tablespoons at a time, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl easily.

Knead the dough for about 5 minutes, add a little olive oil to the bowl and toss the dough ball around to cover it with oil.

Place a clean kitchen towel over the dough and allow to rise for 30 minutes.

Roll out the dough into a large rectangle, then spread the softened garlic butter all over the dough and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.

Starting on one of the long ends of the dough, begin to roll the dough from one end to the other.

Slice the dough into rolls by first, cutting the dough into 2 equal halves, then cut those halves in half again. Continue cutting the dough into halves until the whole roll is sliced into rolls.

Place the rolls into a well greased baking dish. I love baking these rolls in my 8 inch cast iron pan or these can be baked in an 8 x 8 inch square pan. No need for a second rise!

Bake the rolls at 400ºF for 15-20 minutes, until they are cooked through and the cheese is golden and melted.

Serve with your favorite pasta dish or pizza sauce for dipping.
