Ingredients

Despite looking like a decadent dessert, this berry cream puff recipe is super easy to make, and you will only need a few ingredients to make it happen.

  • 2 Sheets Puff Pastry: purchase in the freezer section of the grocery store, be sure to plan for thawing time
  • Egg White: brushed on the puff pastry to make the golden crust on the outside.

For the Lemon Whipped Cream:

  • Heavy Whipping Cream: whips up into a soft, fluffy delicious cream that goes perfectly inside the puff pastry shells
  • Lemon Juice: a little bit goes a long way to add flavor here, you will only need to pick up one lemon to make the magic happen
  • Lemon Zest: so much flavor in the zest of lemons, use a zester to get the smallest pieces of zest into the cream

For the Berries:

  • Berries: Pick your favorite, use a variety, or go with color if you are making these for a special occasion like Valentine’s Day.

Tips for the Best Puff Pastry Dessert

Just a few tips to help make sure you get the most delicious berry cream puffs every time you make this recipe, no matter your cooking skill level.

  • Use Fresh Berries for the best cream puffs. Fresh fruit won’t bleed juice and make the cream puff soggy. Frozen fruit can be used if in a pinch, just be sure to thaw it completely and dry it on a paper towel before using. There will still be some liquid so serve immediately.
  • Keep the Puff Pastry Cold until you are ready to roll it out and cut out the shapes. The cold dough will puff up a lot better than a warm or even room-temperature dough.
  • Don’t Overmix the Whipped Cream, the cream should be stiff enough to pipe with a piping bag and tip, but not so stiff that it turns into butter!
  • Make Sure to Cool the Cooked Puff Pastry Before Filling so the whipped cream doesn’t melt right out of the shell as soon as you fill it. This part can be sped up by placing the cooked puff pastry into the freeze for about 10 minutes.
  • Keep Cold Until Ready to Serve, after the cream puffs are put together, serve immediately or store in the refrigerator until ready to serve. This should stay fresh for at least one day if stored in an airtight container.

Recipe Variations

Want to switch things up? Here are some simple ideas that would also make a delicious cream puff:

  • Mix up the Fruits: try adding different fruits to these cream puffs other than just berries, such as; cherries, kiwi fruit, bananas, coconut, or mangoes
  • Change the Whipped Cream: instead of lemon juice add lime juice, vanilla, or even coconut flakes
  • Leave the Puff Pastry Sheet Whole: make one big loaded puff pastry. Brush the sheets with egg white and bake until puffy and golden brown, split into two, and fill with whipped cream and fruit.
