Guacamole makes a weekly, sometimes daily appearance in our home. It is so easy to make, even my kids have mastered this recipe. Everyone needs a go to easy guacamole recipe in their recipe book. This is a perfect appetizer or something to throw together when someone stops by unexpectedly.

How to Pick an Avocado

Let’s start with the most important part of this recipe, the avocado. These can be pretty tricky to pick out just the perfect one, so let me help you with a few simple tips and things to look for.

  • Look for avocados that are longer, not the round ones. These will have a smaller seed in the center which, I feel gives you more of the avocado flesh.
  • Do not go for the avocados that are hard to the touch, unless you are planning ahead and now you won’t need them for a few days.
  • The avocado should be soft and when pressed a little on the side should indent easily.
  • Another thing to look for is the little stem piece on the top. If this falls off or can be removed easily, you have a good avocado.
  • Lastly, look for the avocados that are a darker green color.

If you have any other tips you would like to share, please leave those down in the comments! Thanks!!

Guacamole Ingredients

This is all you will need to make this simple guacamole recipe:

  • 4 avocados
  • Juice from one lime
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/4 cup red onion
  • 3 roma tomatoes- these are perfect for guacamole, slice in half and remove the seeds then dice into small pieces.
  • 1/2 jalapeno- slice in half and remove the seeds and membranes if you want a mild guacamole.
  • 3 tablespoons cilantro- chop into small pieces, including the stem, there is a lot of flavor in there!

How to make Guacamole Dip

To make this simple guacamole dip recipe start by slicing the avocados in half, opening and removing the seed. Using a spoon, scoop the flesh from the avocado into a mixing bowl.

With a fork, mash the soft avocado until no large junks remain.

Once you have your avocados smashed and smooth, add in the rest of your ingredients. Lime juice, diced tomatoes, diced red onion, diced jalapenos, cilantro and garlic salt.

Fold the ingredients into the smashed avocados until well combined. Keep chilled until ready to serve.

What do you eat Guacamole with?

I’m so glad you asked. This could be a really long list from me because I am a huge Mexican food fan, and I could really eat guacamole with anything. Here are just a few (or maybe a lot) of my favorites:

  • Tortilla chips
  • Nachos
  • Tacos
  • Chicken Taco Salad
  • Shrimp Fajitas
  • Quesadillas
  • Enchiladas
  • Breakfast Hash

How to store Guacamole

If you are making this ahead there are a few things you can do to make sure it stays fresh. After you have prepared the guacamole, place it in an air tight container and place in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. The lime juice will help to keep the guacamole fresh and from turning brown.

Can I freeze Guacamole?

Absolutely! Guacamole freezes beautifully! Place the guacamole into a zip top bag and press out all of the air to make sure there are no air pockets in the bag still.

Freeze the guacamole until you are ready to use it, for up to 3 months. Allow the guacamole to thaw in the refrigerator until ready to eat.
